Nestled in the heart of Spain’s Catalonia region, Girona offers a perfect balance of old-world charm and modern luxury. From its world-class dining options to its rich historical sites, this city is an ideal destination for those looking to experience Spain beyond the usual tourist hotspots. Whether you’re indulging in a Michelin-starred meal, staying in a boutique hotel, or exploring ancient landmarks, Girona promises an unforgettable luxury experience. Based on my visit this past summer, here’s my guide to experiencing this charming city in true luxury…
Where to Stay: Hotel Casa Cacao
For a truly luxurious stay, look no further than Hotel Casa Cacao, owned by the renowned Roca Brothers, who are also behind the famous El Celler de Can Roca and other incredible restaurants (more on these later). Located in the heart of Girona, this boutique hotel offers a perfect blend of comfort, elegance, and personalized service. Each room is designed with warm, minimalist decor, offering panoramic views of the city’s historic skyline. And let’s not forget their artisanal chocolate shop across the street and rooftop terrace, which are both ideal for a sweet indulgence or a relaxing evening with a glass of wine with views.

Where to Eat: Gastronomic Gems by the Roca Brothers
Girona is a culinary destination in its own right, with several high-end dining options that will satisfy even the most discerning palates. Even though there’s an incredibly long waitlist, I must mention El Celler de Can Roca. Ranked as one of the best restaurants in the world, El Celler de Can Roca is a must-visit for food enthusiasts. This three-Michelin-starred restaurant offers an extraordinary dining experience, blending traditional Catalan flavors with innovative techniques. Each dish is a work of art, crafted to surprise and delight your senses.
Also owned by the Roca Brothers, Restaurant Normal offers a more relaxed yet equally delicious dining experience. This is the place to savor traditional Catalan dishes reimagined in a casual and inviting setting. It’s perfect for a leisurely lunch or dinner, offering a seasonal menu that highlights local ingredients. But if you’re looking for a meal or drink with a view, head to La Terrassa, where you can dine al fresco overlooking the picturesque Onyar River and its iconic colorful houses. The menu features Mediterranean cuisine with a modern twist, and the wine list is curated to perfection, offering local and international selections.
What to See and Do: A Guided Exploration
Girona’s compact city center is best explored on foot, and there’s no better way to immerse yourself in its history than with a private walking tour. I highly recommend booking a guide through the Girona Guides Association. Our private guide, Cristina, helped us uncover the rich layers of history of this medieval city while tailoring the experience to our interests (history, architecture, and filming locations).
We started by walking along Girona’s well-preserved medieval walls, which offer stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside. It’s the perfect way to get your bearings and take in Girona’s unique skyline. Then we headed to one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. El Call is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets that transport you back to the Middle Ages. Explore the area’s rich Jewish history while enjoying its quiet, atmospheric charm.
I especially loved admiring the colorful houses by the Onyar River. These iconic houses with their bright facades are one of Girona’s most photographed sites. They line the Onyar River, offering a picture-perfect view, especially from one of Girona’s many bridges, like the Eiffel Bridge, designed by the same architect who created the Eiffel Tower in Paris!
A highlight of any visit to Girona is the imposing Gothic cathedral, located at the top of a grand staircase. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you’ll recognize this spot as the setting for some key scenes in the series. In particular, the cathedral’s 90 steps were used for Queen Margaery Tyrell’s walk of atonement in Season 6. Lastly, we discovered the 12th-century baths which are a hidden gem in Girona. Modeled after Roman and Muslim bathhouses, they offer a tranquil glimpse into the city’s architectural past. The cool, quiet atmosphere is a lovely contrast to the bustling city streets.
Other Luxurious Experiences in Girona
Wine Tasting: Catalonia is known for its wines, and Girona is the perfect place to indulge in a tasting experience. Several local wine bars and restaurants offer curated tastings of regional varieties, including Cava, the region’s famous sparkling wine. Consider booking a private wine tour that takes you to nearby vineyards for an immersive experience.
Art & Culture: Girona is home to several excellent museums and galleries, such as the Museu d’Art de Girona, where you can explore collections spanning centuries of Catalan art. If you’re visiting in May, don’t miss the Temps de Flors, Girona’s annual flower festival, when the city’s streets and courtyards are transformed into vibrant floral displays.
